Tall oaks and rolling, wooded lots define much of St. James, and those trees are the biggest reason gutters clog here. The hamlet has a real mix of houses: Victorian and Gilded Age homes from the era when the Barrymores and Stanford White summered here, older village homes near Lake Avenue, and Colonials, split-levels and high ranches built on larger suburban lots after the war. Hilly ground toward Stony Brook Harbor sends runoff across driveways and toward foundations, and heavy leaf drop in autumn fills gutters within weeks. When water spills over the edge, it soaks fascia, stains siding and ends up in basements. A well-planned gutter and drainage setup matters on these properties.
Route 25A runs past Saint James Episcopal Church, the church that gave St. James its name, and Lake Avenue serves as the hamlet's main street. At Moriches and Harbor Hill Roads, the St. James General Store, built in 1857, is said to be the oldest continuously operating general store in the country and is now a county-owned museum. The St. James station, opened in 1873, is one of the oldest on the LIRR. The Village of Head of the Harbor borders the hamlet to the north, and Stony Brook University sits just to the east. From the older homes near Lake Avenue to the hilly, wooded streets toward Stony Brook Harbor, we install and service seamless gutters throughout St. James.
Under St. James's big oaks, Alcoa Leaf Relief is often the most useful upgrade; it is all-aluminum, unlike plastic guards that break down. For Victorian and older homes, 6" half-round gutters in copper or aluminum fit the architecture and carry heavy runoff. We replace rotted fascia and cap trim with aluminum coil where needed, and our hand-dug drainage carries leader water away on sloped lots without heavy machinery damaging established lawns and plantings.

On heavily wooded lots, a quality guard can make a big difference. We install Alcoa Leaf Relief, an all-aluminum system, and we are a preferred Leaf Relief contractor. We steer homeowners away from plastic and vinyl guards, which tend to warp and crack. Guards reduce clogging, though an occasional check is still a good idea.
Half-round gutters usually match older architecture better than K-style, and we recommend 6-inch half-round for most homes because of its extra capacity. Copper looks especially good on period homes and develops a natural patina, while Alcoa aluminum is a durable standard option. Everything is fabricated seamless on site to fit your rooflines.
Often the fix starts with the leaders. We connect them to underground pipe that carries water to leach basins or extension tails away from the house and driveway. All digging is done by hand, which protects lawns, pavers and irrigation. We look at the grade and runoff pattern during a free estimate.
